Frequency Healing 101: What the Research Actually Shows

Once you start looking into PEMF, you run into two very different worlds of “frequency” information at the same time: peer-reviewed research measuring specific Hz ranges against specific outcomes, and centuries-old traditions (Solfeggio tones, the Schumann resonance) that treat frequency as symbolically or energetically significant. Both show up constantly in PEMF marketing, usually blended together without a label. We think that’s a disservice — so here’s each, kept separate, with sources.

What clinical research has actually measured

Bone healing: ~1.5–75 Hz, with 15 Hz as the clinical standard

This is the best-established range in the literature, for the obvious reason that it’s the oldest and most-studied application. A 2025 review of bone and cartilage response to PEMF found effective stimulation broadly across roughly 1.5–75 Hz, and most FDA-cleared bone growth stimulators specifically use 15 Hz. Intensity matters here too — research generally places bone-healing protocols in a medium intensity range (roughly 15–30 Gauss), notably higher than the pain/inflammation range below.

Pain and inflammation: lower intensity, broader frequency band

The pain research is the deepest evidence base after bone healing. A 2013 Cochrane review found moderate-quality evidence for reduced pain and improved function in knee osteoarthritis. A 2015 meta-analysis in Clinical Rheumatology, pooling 15 trials and over 1,000 patients, found a statistically significant pain-score reduction versus sham treatment. A 2019 randomized trial published in PLOS One found a 25% greater reduction in fibromyalgia pain intensity compared to sham. More recent systematic reviews have specifically examined soft tissue injuries and non-specific low back pain. Across this body of work, lower intensity (roughly 1–10 Gauss) shows up more often than the higher intensities used for bone, and the proposed mechanism is downregulation of inflammatory signaling (the NF-κB and MAPK pathways specifically) rather than a single “magic” frequency.

Sleep and relaxation: 1–4 Hz (preliminary)

This is the least mature area of the three. Some research has looked at very low frequencies — roughly 1–3 Hz, in the same range as delta brainwave activity (0.5–4 Hz, associated with deep sleep and cellular recovery) — for sleep-related outcomes. We want to be honest that this is a thinner, more preliminary evidence base than bone healing or pain, closer to “promising and worth more research” than “established.”

Muscle relaxation: ~15–30 Hz

A secondary thread in the literature places muscle-relaxation-focused protocols in roughly the same mid-range used for bone healing, which tracks with the broader pattern that mid frequencies (roughly 10–30 Hz) tend to dominate musculoskeletal applications generally, while the lowest frequencies (under ~4 Hz) cluster around nervous-system/sleep-adjacent research instead.

What’s tradition, not clinical research

Separately from all of the above, the wellness and sound-healing communities have their own long-standing frequency frameworks — most commonly the Solfeggio frequencies (a set of tones, like 396 Hz or 528 Hz, tied to a modern reconstruction of medieval Gregorian chant scales) and the Schumann resonance (Earth’s own electromagnetic resonance, centered around 7.83 Hz, which is a real, measurable geophysical phenomenon, even though the specific health claims built around it go well beyond what’s been measured). These frameworks are meaningful to a lot of people, and there’s nothing wrong with exploring them — but they come from tradition and numerology, not the clinical literature above, and we’re not going to blur that line by presenting them as if a study measured them. Before you start
